Aspergillus carbonarius

Aspergillus carbonarius is easily distinguished from other black aspergilli by its large heavily decorated conidia. Though individual isolates may appear macroscopically different from some A. niger isolates, the two taxa overlap in macroscopic characteristics and cannot be reliably separated based on colony morphological features alone.
